Spider Veins vs. Varicose Veins

  • What Are Varicose Veins?

    What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are large, bulging, cord-like veins that are most commonly found on the calves or the inside of the legs. Their cause is not entirely understood, but they’re sometimes related to an inherited defect in the structure of the blood vessels. Varicose veins usually enlarge over time, and can become quite painful. Without treatment, they can lead to serious health problems, including phlebitis (chronic inflammation of the vein), leg ulcers, and blood clots.

Varicose veins are not the same as spider veins. Here is a chart that explains the differences.

    Varicose Veins Spider Veins

*Note – Spider veins can sometimes indicate a more medically serious condition if accompanied by pain or swelling.
